The Holly Blue
Tucked away in the quiet neighborhood of Beggarwood, Basingstoke, The Holly Blue on Bradley Way has carved out a charming identity as a contemporary British gastropub that effortlessly blends countryside comfort with modern flair. Whether you're strolling in for a cozy breakfast, a lively lunch with friends, or a candlelit dinner with fine wine, this spot doesn’t just check the boxes-it rewrites them.
From the moment you approach, the vibe is welcoming. Accessibility is clearly a priority here-wheelchair-accessible parking, entrance, seating, and restrooms are all part of the experience, making everyone feel right at home. If you love a spot that mixes rustic charm with polished service, The Holly Blue delivers just that. The fireplace crackling in winter, the airy outdoor seating in summer-it’s the kind of place that adapts with the seasons and always feels inviting.
Let’s talk about the food-because that’s where The Holly Blue truly shines. One of the standout dishes has to be the Forum Lager Battered Fish & Chips. It’s golden, crispy, and paired with thick-cut chips and mushy peas-classic comfort with a refined touch. If you lean toward heartier fare, the Roast Beef is rich, tender, and the Yorkshire pudding is an absolute star on the plate.
But don’t stop there. The Steak and Ale Pie is another customer favorite, brimming with flavor and paired with buttery mash and gravy that tastes like it’s been simmering for hours. Prefer something lighter? The Baked Camembert served with flatbread and chutney is perfect for sharing-or not, depending on how much you love cheese. Vegetarians are also well looked after here. The Vegan Burger and Nut Roast offer satisfying depth and texture, making them more than just menu fillers-they’re actual crowd-pleasers.
Meat lovers will find themselves torn between the Double Cheese Burger, Duck, or even the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich, which brings a spicy crunch that pairs beautifully with one of the many cold beers available, like a crisp pint of Guinness or something from their rotating taps. There’s even a Homemade Scotch Egg that’s worth a special mention-golden outside, perfectly gooey inside. Ideal for nibbling with a drink before the main event.
Speaking of drinks, the wine list here is surprisingly curated for a pub setting. Whether you're a red wine enthusiast or prefer a chilled rosé with your Club Sandwich, there's something here that hits the spot. Not to be outdone, the beer and cocktail menu is equally extensive. Grab a refreshing lager during happy hour, or go classy with a gin-based cocktail if you're in the mood to sip slowly and unwind.
Now, dessert at The Holly Blue isn’t just an afterthought-it’s a destination in itself. The Sticky Toffee Pudding with its rich pecan sauce is the kind of dessert that makes you close your eyes after the first bite. Or if you want something a little different, the Chocolate and Orange Torte has this silky texture that balances citrus and richness beautifully.
On the coffee front, there’s good news for lovers of caffeine. The baristas know their craft. Whether it’s a frothy cappuccino with breakfast or a silky flat white to round off your lunch, the coffee here is no weak brew. And for tea drinkers, the selection is equally satisfying-perfect for sipping while you people-watch or dive into a good book in one of their comfy corner tables.
The Holly Blue’s charm goes beyond just food and drink. It’s a space that caters to all occasions. Whether you're popping in solo for a quick bite and a pint, or planning a relaxed dinner date, it feels right. The staff are attentive without being overbearing, and the ambiance strikes a balance between casual and upscale-a tricky tightrope to walk, but one that’s done well here.
This isn’t a spot offering delivery or takeaway-it’s one of those places you’re meant to experience in person. The vibe, the warmth, the gentle hum of conversations around you-it’s part of the appeal. If you’re local to Basingstoke or just passing through, The Holly Blue makes it feel like a stop worth taking.

Lovely afternoon at the Holly Blue today. Staff were friendly, welcoming and attentive. Caesar salad, club sandwich ( have had on numerous occasions and is amazing) and chicken tenders from kids menu (for an adult who was extremely happy with this as can’t eat big portions but doesn’t like to waste food) were all devoured amongst us today then we had a little room left for the new cronuts, ( toffee and lemon) and a brownie. All so amazing…..really good!! Wide range of cakes to choose from and we were even able to take some home for those who weren’t able to join us. Staff very accommodating. Lovely atmosphere. Didn’t feel rushed. Love that the Holly Blue is on our doorstep and we will be visiting again very soon.
